"Can a Robot See the way we see? -- Neuroscientific Approach to Human Consciousness" ECE GSA Seminar Presentation
Wed, Apr 26 2006
The ECE GSA is hosting Dr. Jung-Ang Lee's presentation;
.
"Can a Robot See the way we see? -- Neuroscientific Approach to Human Consciousness"
.
The main theme of the presentation will be to prune away prevailing misunderstanding/misinformation on consciousness, in particular on the concept of self, by providing a summary of current understanding of human consciousness recently garnered in the field of neuroscience.
.
The speaker, who is conversant with modern physics, theory of computation, and mathematical logic on top of his specialty (neurobiology), is expected to present a thought-provoking and even intuition-shattering talk in a lively manner.
.
A similar presentation by the speaker was previously given to RTP area behavioral scientists at the KECK Center's Behavioral Science Meeting at NCSU last November.
.
BIO:
.
Though I am currently working as a research scientist at the Biomedical/Bioengineering Research Institute at North Carolina Central University, I prefer to think of myself as an independent thinker. My undergraduate degree in Biochemistry is from Yonsei University in Korea. I recieved my Ph.D. from Ohio State University in Neuroscience.
.
As a result of my personality, coupled with the very harsh political circumstances in my country, I have come view ANY kind of knowledge/ideas that were given to me in the form of authority with a thourough and systematic skepticism. This skepticism of knowledge/ideas went so far as to include the validity of mathematical truth, which in turn led to my personal discovery of Godel's theorem. This systematic method of critical thinking has been the most important asset in my career as a knowledge worker--Neuroscientist.
WolfTech Webteam Releases "Tracster" in Public Beta Version
Thu, Jul 13 2006
The WolfTech Webteam has recently created a new web application for use by the NC State community. Tracster is an online course registration planner for use by all Undergraduate and Graduate students. If you are familiar with the XTracs application available on Linux/Solaris, you will immediately recognize this system. Tracster is a web-based alternative for this system. Tracster uses the same sources of information as XTracs, updating its course schedules daily. As with XTracs, a student can find, select, and arrange courses using a visible schedule which can then be printed out or saved. A saved schedule can be reloaded into the application should changes need to be made. Completed schedules can be used as a reference when registering for classes, however, like XTracs, Tracster is only a pre-registration schedule organizer. It does not register a student with PackTracks in any way. Students are invited to give this application a try in its current public beta version. Feedback, suggestions for improvement, and bug reports should be emailed to wolftech-webmaster@ncsu.edu. The tool may be found at: http://www.wolftech.ncsu.edu/tracster/

Matlab installations for student-owned computers
Thu, Sep 14 2006
The Matlab vendor, the MathWorks, has agreed to permit the College of Engineering (COE) to install Matlab/Simulink on student-owned computers for students enrolled in COE curricula or COE courses, provided ITECS controls the installation. This is a pilot project within the College of Engineering only and does not apply to students enrolled in curricula or courses outside COE.
Students can have Matlab/Simulink installed only at the ITECS helpdesk by appointment. They will need to schedule the appointment by visiting http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/software/install/, bring their computer (laptop or CPU) and All-Campus card to the ITECS helpdesk at the scheduled appointment time, and sign a Matlab/Simulink Student Use Acceptance Form.
Effective 9/12/06, Matlab/Simulink plus the Optimization, Statistics, and Signal Processing toolboxes will be installed by default. Other toolboxes will be installed only at the faculty request prior to the start of each semester and only if the campus holds enough concurrent seats for the requested toolbox. Toolbox requests after the semester begins will not be accepted for that semester.

ACM-AITP/WiCS Geek-a-Thon
Fri, Oct 5 2007
Two student organizations in the Department of Computer Science (ACM-AITP and WiCS) are organizing a GeekAThon -- one of several events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Department of Computer Science at N.C. State. A GeekAThon is a marathon weekend-long event to refurbish computers and distribute them to middle school students who have no computers in their homes. There have been 9 previous GeekAThons in the area but this is the first by NCSU volunteers. We invite you to signup for one or more shifts (a shift is 4 hours) on Oct 5, 6, or 7. You will receive a cool tshirt (with geek on the front) and free food. And you will be doing a great service. Don't worry about not having experience refurbishing computers...it will be an assembly-line process (we plan to refurbish 200 computers in three days) and there will be experienced folks around to show you the process for your table. The event will be held at the Centennial Campus Middle School cafeteria (map/directions are on the GeekAThon website below -- the CCMS adjoins Centennial Campus). There will be lots of non-geek tasks as well...including working on the giving part called the GiveAThon (held at the GeekAThon on Sat and Sun afternoon). http://www.csc.ncsu.edu/geekathon Hope you can join us!
