The Benjamin Franklin Scholars Program provides Engineering and Computer Science students at
North Carolina State University with a means to complement their technical education with an
in-depth study of humanities or social sciences. The result is graduates who are knowledgeable
not only in technology, but also in human affairs. The program is open to students majoring in
computer science and all disciplines in engineering. Students who complete the program earn two
undergraduate degrees in five years - a B.S. in engineering or computer science and a B.A. or B.S.
in one of the humanities or social sciences.
For the humanities degree, students are encouraged to pursue any degree in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Franklin Scholars who elect the option to choose a Multidisciplinary Study Degree (MDS) have a thematic focus and build their major concentration around it, using courses selected from appropriate desciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Examples of MDS concentrations include Science, Technology and Society, International Aspects of Technology, and Communication and Human Relations. In addition, all Franklin Scholars enroll in three "Franklin courses." These small, interdisciplinary seminar courses, designed especially for Franklin Scholars, explore such issues as the role of technology in society and the importance of societal and ethical values. |
