60th Southeastern Regional Conference

On April 2-3, 2009, NCSU AIAA attended the annual Region 2 Student Conference, in Huntsville, AL. Presentations lasted most of both days, highlighted by a luncheon on Thursday and an awards banquet Friday night. The conference, hosted by the University of Alabama at Huntsville and the University of Tennessee Space Institute, attracted 259 students, both undergrad and graduate. NC State led the way, bringing 59 students involved in 13 presentations of technical issues. NC State won six of the twelve awards, highlighted by a sweep in the regional design team competition. The following is a summary of the awards NC State received:

  • 1st Place Freshman-Sophomore Open Topic - Whitney Lohmeyer
  • 2rd Place Undergraduate Technical Paper - Brett Pearce
  • 1st Place Masters Technical Paper - Matt Hazard
  • 1st Place Regional Design Team - Biologically-Inspired Obstacle Traversing Systems Team
  • 2nd Place Regional Design Team - Inflatable Lunar Rover
  • 3rd Place Regional Design Team - Bio-Inspired Morphing Wing Design

The NCSU AIAA would like to thank the student branches of AIAA at the University of Alabama at Huntsville and the University of Tennessee Space Institute for their efforts in putting this year's conference together. It was a blast!

Next year's conference will be hosted by Auburn University and Tuskegee University, with a final location to be determined. NCSU AIAA plans to bring even more students and build upon this tradition of excellence, demonstrating the strength of the students at NC State University.
