The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is the professional society for engineers, scientists and allied professionals devoted to the field of aerospace (aviation and space). The Institute addresses the needs of individuals who conceive, design, develop, test, construct, and operate air and space vehicles, their associated systems and subsystems, as well as the educators who train the professionals, researchers who continuously renew the technology, managers who lead their efforts and innovators who bring forth new concepts.

AIAA strives to enable the continuing contributions and global leadership of professionals in the aerospace community – a community committed to ensuring our national physical and economic security, improving the quality of life for all humankind, and expanding the frontiers of air and space, through the advancement and execution of aerospace programs, capabilities, and applications of aerospace technology in other related complex interests. Further, AIAA is dedicated to instilling pride in aerospace education and professionalism, plus stimulating and establishing a credo of "wanting to make a difference." The mission of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics consists of the following:

  • To foster AIAA as the voice of, and advocate for, the aerospace profession by building awareness of aerospace contributions and providing an appropriate voice for the professional community in public policy debate at both national and local levels, including diverse media outreach programs.
  • To contribute to society by acting as a catalyst for information flow and creative exchange via technical meetings, and continuing to provide a world-class technical information and publications service to keep members well informed.
  • To create high value to our members (individual and corporate) including major emphasis on improving both internal and external communications, membership benefit/value, and the creative facilitation of life-long learning.
  • To strengthen the profession by stimulating workforce development and retention activities including supporting the educational process for future professionals with students and academic institutions; and to focus on and track current or future funded programs/initiatives/capabilities and/or new areas of emerging opportunity for AIAA members.

AIAA currently has over 160 active student branches, including 12 foreign student branches, with a total active membership of over 5,000 students worldwide. Your student branch is your base of operations in AIAA during your college years, and it’s an open door to professional activities, recognition, and contacts that would otherwise be unavailable to students.

As a nonprofit student organization, the NCSU student branch of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics serves the student body of North Carolina State University by promoting aerospace engineering on campus. We invite respected members of the aerospace community, scientists, engineers, and researchers, to our bi-weekly meetings to present their work to an audience of students and faculty memebers. We also organize research conference trips and the End-of-the-Year picnic for the aerospace engineering program at NC State.
