Here are some of the things our organization has done in the
past and chosen to continue as tradition. If it's listed here be
sure that as a member of ACM/AITP or of the Computer Science
Department you will have the opportunity to be involved in these
great events this year!
Every year the ACM/AITP sponsors a department
Pig-Pickin' on the last day of classes in the spring
semester. Professors and students gather at Pullen Park
to feast and frolic. Volleyballs, water balloons, pies, and frisbees usually
make the scene, and sometimes there's even an element of
adventure now that Joyce Hatch has turned over pig cookin'
duties to the ACM/AITP officers!
In the spring 2004 semester the officers of ACM/AITP
acquired 30 donated computers, refurbished them and
delivered them to Henderson Middle School in Henderson.
A similar project was undertaken in 2001
when ACM/AITP delivered about 30 computers to Waynesville
Middle School in Waynesville.
Peer advising is an attempt to help students find the
right classes by talking to other students in computer
science. Often the best perspective on a professor's
teaching style or assignments can be gained from another
student, and peer advising gives students a chance to
find out even more than can be discovered from class
evaluations. On a table in the central spot of computer
science, the front of Withers Hall, Catalogs, Schedules
and a few helpful students provide handy assistance to
choosing classes.
Each year, one of our most successful and informative
meetings is our State of the Department meeting. The head
of the computer science department takes
the time to come and talk to the chapter about our
department and its future. In 2005, CSC and ECE joined together to
form a JOINT state of the department. Both department heads, both directors of
graduate schools and other key individuals from each department were present for an
open Question and Answer session with students.
This is a great meeting to attend. Keep your eyes open for the next one!

Each semester, we have several companies come to do
presentations for our chapter. The interest of companies
in NC State computer science students has grown
tremendously, and as a result, we
have had many great companies come and speak with us.
Check the ACM/AITP calendar for upcoming presentations.
